Welcome to another edition of IntelePeer’s Tech Tuesday series. This week Valerie Amick, Bid Response Manager, speaks about her early interest in telecommunications and shares some fantastic career advice.

1. What first got you interested in working in technology?

I’ve always been interested in learning new things, technology being one of them. My dad was an engineer at Bell and would share with us what he was working on or being trained in. That sparked my initial interest in technology and communications. I was fortunate to start my career in telecommunications, and that career path led me to many different roles and departments within diverse technology companies.

2. What technology do you use the most – whether in your personal or professional life?

My smartphone – and no, it’s not an iPhone. It keeps me connected to everything from ordering groceries to listening to a company-wide All Hands’s call to keeping up with afterschool activities. Technology has come a long way from the days when I carried a pager and had a flip phone.

3. What was the most challenging aspect of your career and how did you overcome it?

I would say the most challenging aspect has been simply the industry itself in terms of fluctuation, mergers and acquisitions, and changing technologies.

To successfully navigate challenges, I believe it is important to be able to adapt and change with the times, especially as technology is always changing. Put your perceptions aside, respect others, and forge ahead for your own success.

4. Any advice for women who want to join the tech industry?

First, stay current on the advances in technology. Being able to understand the constantly changing industry and keeping abreast of what’s on the horizon will make you an invaluable asset.

Second, find a mentor; this will help you immensely. That mentor will be able to help you understand the company, provide guidance, and navigate the industry. Your mentor will teach you skills that you can carry with you throughout your career.

5. What advice would you give your younger self who is just starting in the workforce?

Don’t be afraid to take a chance and be open to any opportunity that presents itself to you. It can be difficult to put your fears aside if you are set on a specific and single career path. Explore the opportunities and take a risk outside of your comfort zone. My experience has taught me that often the risks we fear the most when taking on a new opportunity produces the largest reward.

Bonus: What podcast are you currently listening to?

I am currently listening to Technology Pill and am almost finished listening to the Corporate Spies Gone Wild episode.
