Welcome to another edition of IntelePeer’s Tech Tuesday series. This week Ana Milian, HR Director, shares how COVID-19 has impacted her career. She’s become motivated to continue to improve and advance in her career through these challenges.

1. How did you end up in the tech industry?

I worked for a telecom back in 1994 for about 10 years. I worked for a distribution company for another 10 years, then came across an exciting opportunity to head IntelePeer’s Human Resources, and here I am.

2. What technology do you use the most – whether in your personal or professional life?

In HR we work with some exciting new HR technologies for a smoother hiring process and onboarding experience. We also use tech to automate many of our processes in performance management, talent management, applicant tracking software, and employee surveys with most tools incorporating AI and analytics.

Employee self-service tools are improving and will play a bigger role helping HR. It’ll help with education on new policies and allowing employees to train based on their schedules, while HR can implement deadlines and send reminders.

3. What was the most challenging aspect of your career and how did you overcome it?

The biggest challenge has been managing today’s workforce issues, emerging from the chaos of the COVID-19 pandemic and the impact on the organization and people. Through challenges, you find new opportunities to learn, grow, inspire, and help others to rise from the crisis and adapt to our new normal.

4. Any advice for women who want to join the tech industry?

We need more women in tech. At IntelePeer, we are fortunate to have some amazing women in various roles, including leadership positions. Join networking groups and seek internship opportunities are some ways to start building relationships. Search for organizations that support women in tech – there are many.

5. What advice would you give your younger self who is just starting in the workforce?

Find a great mentor or seek leaders that inspire and motivate others. It may be you one day. Be curious, embrace challenges, and don’t be afraid to go beyond your comfort zone. You’ll be surprised how much more you are capable of doing. Learn from every experience and failure, because those will happen. Keep a positive outlook, even in the face of challenges.

Bonus: What podcast are you currently listening to?
